Just as the disciples prepared an upper room for a Passover meal, members of The Crossing prepared it's Sanctuary for Holy Communion in a special way on Maundy Thursday. The space contained a large square of tables, at which over 30 people sat and shared together in an act of remembrance, as instructed by Jesus.
The special service, led jointly by Rev Mark Pengelly and Rev Ann Le Mare, consisted of three acts of remembering from the Bible. To being, the first Passover of the Israelites in captivity in Egypt, was brought to mind, as bitter herbs and salt water were shared. Then, remembering the foot-washing of the disciples by Jesus, the ministers washed and dried the hands of all those gathered. Finally, all shared in Holy Communion, recalling the Last Supper of Christ and giving thanks for the Sacrament. For all the words used, perhaps the most powerful element of the evening was the end, when all left in silence, thinking of the disciples and Jesus making their way to the garden of Gethsemane.
